The Witcher: Special Effects Behind The Scenes

With TV shows getting bigger and grander in scope (take Game of Thrones for example) networks and streaming services are always looking for ways to increase the scope of the small screen. Fantasy TV shows are one of the best mediums for this (especially after the popularity of the aforementioned GOT) - that’s where Geralt of Rivia and company come in. The series based on the books of Andrzej Sapkowski has been a smash hit for Netflix, with the show having the same huge scale of its forebears and being the same in scope as even an MCU movie. That means intricate world building and amazing VFX have gone into building the world for the show, as well as some just plain technical wizardry. A blood, sweat and tears went into making the series and without the work of some of the biggest VFX companies in the business the series wouldn’t be what it is today.

So we decided it’s time to peak behind the curtain and see all the work that goes on the other side of the camera. We will take a look at how they brought some of the creepiest creatures to life (such as the Striga and the Kikimora) using a blend of CGI and practical effects, how they pulled off that opening battle sequence with the invading Nilfgaardians (and how they only shot with 15 people), how they created and designed the intricate city of Cintra (and what real life location it is based on), the real life sets used, which actors had to be dangled on wires for almost a full day, a little piece of trivia on the crazy amount of work Henry Cavill had to put in to get in the shape and what could be in store for Season 2. So let’s get ready to travel to the world of The Continent, avoiding monsters and beasts along the way as we take a look at some truly magical visual effects.
