Everything old is new again as Top Gun Maverick flies past highest grossing movie of the year and is well on its way to establishing its place on the list of highest grossing movies of all time. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell returns to Fightertown and audiences are all in. 36 years in the making the filmmakers have had a lot of time for the movie to become a part of the culture. The real Top Gun school at this point will fine any of the students that quote the movie. The rest of us haven’t been subject to such restraint. A movie that has become part of the cultural landscape can be a delicate thing to revisit. After 36 years the movie looms large in our imaginations. Often there’s hardly a chance for the new movie to live up to our expectations or the memories we have. But if it lives up to those lofty expectations it becomes a goldmine. It helps that it’s one of the world’s most bankable stars returning to his star making role. And being a bankable star he gets to make the kind of requests like ride around in actual Navy jets and bring his old friend and costar back to the role that made him a star as well. Even the new cast was all aboard the nostalgia train leaving in Easter Eggs of their own that at times even their co-stars missed. Production went to great lengths to capture the look and feel of the original film from backlit jets on the aircraft carrier to a prop controller for the F-14 that doesn’t really exist. What did you see that reminded you of the original movie? Let us know in the comments and while you’re there be sure to like and subscribe.
